  1. The breed is popularly known as the Indian Star Tortoise (Geochelone elegans), species of tortoise, and they are commonly found in dry areas and scrub forests in India and Sri Lanka. But, now they are introduced to many other areas worldwide and can be seen in zoos in several countries. Also Geochelone elegans is very popular in the exotic pet trade, and they can be bought and bred in homes, just like some reptiles like pythons are domesticated. But check the laws on wild life and the laws on the protection of endangered species in your country, because, while these may be available for sale with traders, there can be strict penal action against violation of laws.
